Dress Up Your Dresser With Gorgeous, One-of-a-Kind Trinket Dishes!
Dresser tops have a habit of attracting lots of little items: rings, necklaces, hair ties, wristbands, nail files, pins, you name it. A gorgeous way to clear up that clutter is with baked clay jewelry or trinket dishes.
The swoon-worthy plates above were made by Laura at A Beautiful Mess. They’re fun and easy to make, and they make great gifts.
What you’ll need:
white, black, and colored oven-bake clay (Laura recommends Sculpey because it’s soft)
plastic clay knife or x-acto knife
rolling pin or large glass jar
can or jar to trace
oven-safe small bowl or ramekin (or muffin tray)
gold paint (or gold leafing pen)
glaze to seal (optional)
While the color combinations are endless, my favorites were made with white, grey, black, and two bright colors that make a pretty third color when mixed.
For example, to achieve the stunning design below (our personal favorite), the two bright colors were hot pink and lemon yellow, which combined in areas to create a yummy orange hue.
What you’ll do:
Choose your colors. Roll each into a snake about 5 inches long. Laura says she usually makes two thicker rolls of the white, a medium one of the grey, thinner rolls of the bright colors, and an extra skinny one of the black.
Combine the rolls to make a larger log then twist them around to look like a candy cane. Make sure the white ones have colored rolls between them.
Twist and roll until the log is about twice its original length. Fold it back on itself, twist the ends together, roll until its about twice its original length again and repeat the process two or three more times.
Smush the clay into a ball. If you don’t see enough color, pull it apart and re-smush.
Using a rolling pin or a glass jar, roll out the ball of clay. A glass jar makes it easy to see how the colors are combining as you roll over them. Roll to 1/4 inch thickness, rolling from different directions and/or using different pressure to create a marbled look.
When you’re happy with the look, use something about 6 inches round (large can or jar or small plate) as a template and cut your dish shape out with the knife.
Carefully place the clay circle into an oven-safe bowl. Use one that’s a little smaller than your dish will be so that it will sag in the center and give you a bowl shape. Another idea is to drape the clay over a small oven-safe bowl or upside-down muffin tin and ruffle the edges a few times like you do when making a pie crust to get the look below by One Artsy Mama. Bake according to the package directions, usually 15 minutes at 275 degrees.
When cool, turn over and gently tap out, or lift it off the upside-down bowl or muffin tin. Paint the edges with gilding paint or gold leafing pen. If using, seal with glaze. Note, this optional step is just to get the look of the type of glaze you chose — glossy for example — and will not make the clay dish food or dishwasher safe.
But wait, there’s more!
You’ll have some leftover clay when you cut out your circle. You can always add more clay to it to make another dish or other small object.

I rolled mine together and stuck it in a jewelry cabochon mold to create this matching pendant. Way more fun than letting it go to waste, right?
