Give Kitty a Taste of the Great Outdoors
Is your cat like the orange tabby above — always on the inside looking out? Then she needs a patio all her own. She needs a catio!
There’s a good reason to keep kitty indoors, of course — her safety. And the safety of birds and lizards and anything else the little huntress decides to pounce on. But like all creatures, including us humans, she longs for the sun on her face, the wind in her fur, and the feel of grass beneath her paws.
And you can give that to her with a clever enclosure just for cats, like this one (below) by Seattle-based catio designer Cynthia Chomos. “I wanted to keep her safe, healthy and happy, and really provide her with an enriching outdoor experience,” Cynthia told the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) about her “sun worshipper” Serena.
But there’s more to consider than just your feline’s happiness, such as budget, permission if necessary (from a landlord, home owner’s association, or your city, for example), or if your area is inhabited by large predators such as bears. Adds the HSUS:
Cats are great climbers—and sometimes even wily diggers—so make your catio escape-proof. There should be no openings he could squeeze through, even on the top. Also avoid anything that he could catch his collar on or get stuck in.
As much as you want to keep your cat in her catio, remember that you also want to keep other animals out. So ensure that your catio frame is strong and all components are firmly attached.
The HSUS has lots of other great tips for DIY-ers and suggestions for professionally made models, too. You can read the complete article here.
