How to Use a Shelf as Furniture

This is a great idea if you’re on a budget. After all, you can get a 12 x 48 inch shelf for about $10 from a big box home improvement store. Or you could use scrap wood you might have lying around.

Utilitarian brackets can cost as little as a buck a piece and if you wanted you could make them virtually disappear by painting them to match your wall color. But even a shiny chrome bracket or a decorative scroll one like these pictured below can cost as little as $5 or $6 a piece.

But forget budget! This is also a great idea if instead of short on dollars, you’re short on space.

Using shelves in place of nightstands make a small bedroom seem airier. If you need more storage you can hang two shelves, one above the other. Just the fact that the floor is visible beneath them gives the illusion of more space.

In a small living room, a shelf or shelves attached to the wall behind your couch creates a sofa table.

Hang a shelf in a nook or a long one along along a wall and you’ve created a home office.

Save space in an entryway by putting up a shelf instead of a console table.

Whether you want to save money, save space, or both, think of using a shelf in place of furniture.
